How did Legionnaires’ disease get its name?
Legionnaires‘ disease acquired its name in 1976 after an outbreak of pneumonia occurred among people attending the American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Later, the bacterium causing the illness was named Legionella pneumophila. On July 21, 1976, the American Legion opened its annual three-day convention at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
